Awesome Audio Mojo from Ed Wolfrum…

A terrific little video story about my pal and favorite engineer Ed Wolfrum of Audio Graphics in Royal Oak, MI. One of those guys who, if you ask him the time, will build you a watch -you know the type? I was amazed to come across this video today and learn that Dr. Wolfrum was the inventor of the D. I. (or Direct Input) box, which helps countless musicians do their job better. I did not know that. I’m blown away.

  1. Nice find Steve and interesting. That little box changes alot. I even have a distant cousin the mic splitter in my arsenal. What would we do without gadgets.

    Hello Steve,

    Thanks for the post.

In fact I did not know I “invented” the direct box. I had been building and selling the things to studios and broadcasters in the Detroit area since about 1962. This venture helped get me through college. The Freep guys who did the story, after Dennis Coffey told them about the Wolf box on another interview, did the research and discovered that nobody else was taking instruments in direct while I thought everyone was doing it.

I’ve now had requests to build them again “just like they were” but I can’t get the quality transformers I used and I have tested others with poor results. If I can’t do it right I won’t do it at all!

    Pax to All,

    Ed

I always carry a couple of your DI’s great-grandchildren when I’m going out to a gig, Ed -will never look at one again without thinking of you!

Thanks for checking in -as always, my best to you and Susan.
