Could Art Directors be right?

Could Art Directors be right?

Some art director once boasted that a pix is worth a thousand words and it got picked up and repeated by every art director who has been on this good green globe ever since.

And while I disagree about the exact amount of words a picture is worth -sometimes it’s much less, sometimes it’s much more -it’s hardly worth the effort to try and argue this point with a designer or art director. They’ll just drone on and on and on… wear you right down to the nub, as it were… to where you might as well give them the point just to shut them up and get them back to their magical Land o’ Pixels.

That being said, I put great stock in using imagery -photos and/or illustrations -in my blogs, sales pages, books, videos -heck, everything I create or publish -because photos and drawings not only create visual interest, but they help tell the story.

Or at least help the story along. After all, “In the beginning was the word…” Right? Read more »

Thankfully, the day of the three piece suit and the mandatory power tie are gone, replaced by today’s business casual dress policy.A suit and tie or a sport coat, slacks, dress shirt and tie are still appropriate for a court appearance or shaking hands with the President. They’re probably not appropriate for a meeting with a building contractor. The trick is to look good –but not so good that it makes your clients feel uncomfortable about their dress. And here’s how to do it. Read more »

Allow me to quote myself…

Twitter: tool or toy?

“Facebook. I just don’t get it. Same goes for Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn, all those social networking sites. I’ve read the information, heard the hype, but just can’t seem to connect with the concept. Guess I’m getting old.” That’s a recent statement from my assistant, who happens to be quite a bit younger than I am and who is also usually very up-to-date with current trends.”

That’s the lead paragraph of my latest column in EventDV magazine, “Social Marketing in the 21st Century.” If you’re a bit confused about the whole Twitter-Facebook-LinkedIn thing, too, you can read the first part of my two-part series on the subject read it here.
