Inauguration has Good Photo Mojo

It’s January 20, and the United States will inaugurate its first black president at noon today. Talk about Good Mojo. The smooth transition of leadership; the opportunity for someone else to make a mess of things … or not.

Mr. Obama has our full support and plenty of Good Mojo all on his own, and we’ll talk more about that later. But right now, here’s another very, very cool piece of magic for you, something pretty slick I read about on Popular Mechanics a while back and which is now being promoted on CNN.

The Capitol, captured by Photosynth.

The Capitol, captured by Photosynth.

Microsoft Photosynth is pretty remarkable. Use it online for free and it analyzes available photos taken of any particular subject or location or event, such as the Washington Monument, the St. Louis Memorial Arch, or the 2009 Rose Bowl. It first scans for points in the photos -whether there are dozens or even hundreds -looking for overlaps -then arranges the photos digitally into a clickable, movable 3D model.

The idea is for everyone who is attending the inauguration to take a picture of the event and send it to CNN who, along with Microsoft, will be assembling the 3D panorama.

CNN will use the new Photosynth program to stitch everyone’s photos into a panoramic view.

Talk about getting The Big Picture!

If you’re on the scene, send your photos here.
