Just What Makes Donna So Special?

Angry WomanLast week, I heard from a Mojo reader who is working on starting and marketing a new online business. She stated that (just like all of us) she “gets a lot of e-mail advertisements which I know have information that could be helpful,” and was curious about a webinar invitation she recently received from a woman named Donna who is offering tricks for avoiding the “YouTube Slap.”

I read the info she forwarded –and I’d like you to do the same. Then tell me…what would your reaction be to a webinar invite that started like this?

“The YouTube beast is on a rampage. All my channels were shut down 2 weeks ago. They are shutting down hundreds of YouTube channels without warning, without reason, and there is no sign that they will slow down either! So I have a question … Are you using YouTube as part of your marketing arsenal? YOU SHOULD BE!

“Millions of people are on YouTube every single day searching for information and value and you can make a fortune on YouTube alone… But you’ve got to be careful… VERY careful when you’re on YouTube’s playground.

“Tonight I’m going to reveal to you a little bag of tricks that should allow you to stay on YouTube for the long-haul.

“Trust me, you do NOT want to put your blood, sweat, tears, and years into building a YouTube channel and then one day try and log-in and BAM! ‘YOUR ACCOUNT HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY DISABLED.’ And YouTube doesn’t have a phone number to contact…YouTube doesn’t care about YOU. YouTube’s $10.00 / hr employees are on the hunt to shut down anything and everything that looks at all suspicious and if you send them an email requesting a reason as to why you got shut down, they’ll just send you a cookie-cutter email response and that will be the end of it.

“Tonight will change the way you play the game on YouTube…Space is limited. Reserve your Webinar seat now ….”

Whew! So how much would you trust a marketing expert who doesn’t even know how to prevent getting her account shut down on YouTube? Let alone someone who shouts at you using all caps?

:::

I did a little research on the person who emailed this invite. It appears that this self-proclaimed “online success coach,” was shut down for pushing only hard-sell promotional videos on her YouTube channel –pretty much a no-no in both YouTube Land and in today’s online marketing climate of “inform… then sell.”

Would you trust a “marketing expert” who stridently rails against “$10.00/hr employees … on the hunt…?” One who blames YouTube for her mistake? One who obviously hasn’t heard that the old in-your-face marketing strategy commonly used by satellite dish marketers, snake oil salesmen and internet marketing millionaire makers have been replaced by other, less intrusive and more memorable methods of getting your message across?

Bad Mojo Alert!

Bad Mojo!

Marketing Philistines like Donna are a dime a dozen and should be marked with some sort of special sign so you’d know to avoid the likes of her. The little “Bad Mojo” alert icon, maybe.

Yep, it is a free country. We all have the right to try for the brass ring. It’s just that trying to promote marketing services without knowing what you’re doing is a huge disservice to people who are really trying to make sense of social networking, internet and online marketing. I think Donna is just another annoying voice in the crowd that drones on about now much money she makes and how much money you can make when you give her some money to learn her amazing secrets yadda yadda yadda …I have very little time for that. I would suspect that you don’t either.
