“It is a happy talent to know how to play.” –Emerson
It’s rough out there.
We’re all, in one way or another, trying to make our way through the financial chaos around us.
We work more: longer hours, more days. We run here and there, looking for clients and business under every rock we find.
We can get so caught up in the pursuit of financial security, we forget what we already have: family, friends, a roof over our heads, food on the table, our health.
Now maybe we don’t all have the same amount.
And maybe some of us ARE struggling more than others.
But I think that it’s times such as these when we need to step back and take time for what really matters. Clear our heads a bit.
Case in point: a friend of mine’s father was ill and in the hospital. He went through a long period of recovery and decline: until he succumbed to his illness. At the same time, the company for which my friend worked went through a series of changes. Not only was she under extreme stress due to her father’s illness, she was also concerned for her job. She felt so obligated to (and dependent upon) her work that she neglected her role as daughter. And in the end, she lost her job and her father. To this day, she still carries the guilt of that time.
We’ve all been there though, haven’t we?
We get so caught up in our work that we feel guilty if we take time for what really matters in our life. Whether it’s a funeral, a wedding, a birthday, a long soak in a hot tub…
We need to see ourselves as more than the work we do.
We need to play. To relish what we already have.
So go ahead and forget the race for a minute. Enjoy a sunrise. Go fishin’. Watch how a bee darts in and out of a flower. Listen to your child’s laughter and join right in. Play catch with your dog. Listen to some good old rock-n-roll and turn the stereooohhh way up. We all need a dose of Good Mojo.
As my friend would tell you, don’t tell yourself that you’ll find time later.
We all know how that turns out.

great idea. Now if we can just get our bosses to do the same we got it made.
